Sony Unveils Four High Performance VAIO Notebooks;

SpeedStep Pentium III-Enabled PCs Feature MovieShaker(TM) Software

NEW YORK, June 26 /PRNewswire/ -- DIGITAL FOCUS -- Sony Electronics is racing to the front of the pack with four powerful new 750MHz* VAIO© notebooks - the PCG-XG29, PCG-XG29K, PCG-F590 and the PCG-F590K.

All four notebooks are designed to meet the needs of users seeking a variety of high-performance and multimedia computing requirements and include Intel© 750MHz* SpeedStep(TM) technology.***** They all feature an enhanced 8X (max.) DVD-ROM drive and 3D graphics support with the inventive NeoMagic© MagicMedia(TM) 256XL graphics system with 6MB of SGRAM (Video RAM).

``Convergence and integration within a smaller, lighter form factor are fast becoming the cornerstones of the mobile PC market. Sony continues to create speedy yet light computing tools with the frequent traveler and demanding executive in mind,'' noted Matt Sargent, mobile computing analyst from ARS. ``High-style meets with high-end business applications and digital video capabilities in one convenient and powerful package. Sony strikes the perfect balance between form and function with these new VAIO notebooks.''

MovieShaker(TM) Digital Video Editing Software

Both the new XG-29 Series and the F590 Series notebooks include the new digital video editing MovieShaker(TM) software application. With this software, creative and professional movie-making is a snap, taking just three easy steps.

Supplied MovieShaker software simplifies the home-movie making process into three easy steps: First, using one of the two built-in i.LINK© (IEEE 1394) ports, users transfer the video or still image from their Sony or other compatible digital camcorder into the PC. Second, users select one of the five themes that the MovieShaker software offers, ranging from slow moving ``Romantic'' to fast-paced ``Exciting.'' Third, users click on the ``Shake'' icon and the MovieShaker software automatically creates a finished ``film''-complete with transitions, effects and music based on the user's theme selection.

MovieShaker software also enables users to create digital home movies, putting them in charge of the controls, such as re-arranging scenes, inserting customized text and audio, and selecting appropriate transitions.

New Levels of Performance - SpeedStep Technology

All four notebooks include mobile Pentium© III processors with Intel SpeedStep***** technology, giving them near desktop performance and all the benefits of mobility. These processors can automatically switch between two performance modes -- a battery optimized mode (when running on batteries) and a maximum performance mode (when plugged in), creating the best balance between performance and battery life.

The entire VAIO line up includes user-friendly software and clever key applications like Adobe Premiere© LE, Sony DVgate(TM) Motion and DVgate Still, Windows© 2000 Professional or Windows 98 Second Edition and Microsoft Word 2000.

The XG29K is one of the world's first mobile Windows 2000-based digital editing notebooks.

The XG and F series include Sony's entire DV editing suite with Sony's PictureGear(TM) software for enhanced management of digital content, including panoramic photography for creative business presentation features.

Every VAIO notebook features the i.LINK digital interface for quick and easy video photography transfer from a Sony DV Handycam© or Digital 8 camcorder. Coupled with Sony's Smart Connect software, you can easily network systems for sharing printers, files, CD/DVD/CD-RW drives and Internet and connections with another equipped VAIO notebook or desktop PC.

PCG-XG29 and PCG-XG29K

Both the XG29 and XG29K sport an expandable intercooler flap, enclosing the cooling fan and keyboard with reflective key text and a convenient tilt angle. Housed in an attractive case, both the XG29 and XG29K are incredible space-savers with a thin profile of 1.75 inches. A digital touch pad, high- capacity Lithium-Ion battery with dual battery capability and Sony's programmable Jog Dial(TM) control are also built in.

Among the smallest mobile DV editing units available, the XG29 and XG29K are crafted to allow these enhanced attributes to function at their maximum performance, while also maintaining light weight and long battery life. Targeted for the business professional and multimedia notebook user who values modular convenience, the systems combine top performance computing with such features as built-in stereo speakers for optimum audio and high-resolution image transferring and manipulation. In addition, both include the option of a convenient multimedia XG Dock for optimum functionality.

The XG29 comes with Windows 98 (Second Edition) pre-loaded, while the XG29K includes Windows 2000 Professional for optimum business computing efficiency. Both include a fast, mobile Pentium© III processor featuring Intel 750MHz* Processor with SpeedStep***** technology, 14.1-inch active matrix displays, and a convenient modular design - weighing about six pounds with a 1.75-inch thin profile. The XG29 and XG29K are scheduled to ship in July and will start at $3,600.**

The PCG-F590 and PCG-F590K

The F590 comes with Windows 98 (Second Edition) pre-loaded, while the F590K includes Windows 2000 Professional. Built for speed and endurance, the F590 boasts its hearty 18.1GB*** hard drive and 128MB of SDRAM for super power and memory. With increased performance and functionality, the F590 and the F590K also feature dazzling 15-inch XGA TFT displays.

``Those searching for high-end, all inclusive business features in a notebook today appreciate the arsenal of applications, digital video capabilities and lightning speed that these new 750MHz Sony systems can deliver,'' said Mark Hanson, vice president of PC products marketing for Sony Electronics, Personal Network Solutions Company (PNSC). ``We recognize that portable computing is no longer an issue of luxury, but one of necessity. The XG and F500 Series, along with every VAIO notebook, are cleverly engineered to surpass these expectations.''

The F590 and F590K will be available in July and will start at a selling price of less than $3,800.**
