Sun Announces General Availability of Jiro Technology 1.0 Release Delivers
Robust Environment for Development of Easy Storage Management Solutions for
Multi-Vendor Storage Systems and Storage Networks

PALO ALTO, Calif., Jun 28, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Sun Microsystems,
Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced general availability of the Jiro(TM)
Technology 1.0 release. The first fully-supported, product-level release of Jiro
technology offers developers comprehensive development tools, training
materials, and development support that will enable them to quickly deliver
integrated storage management solutions for complex, distributed environments.

"Jiro Technology 1.0 is a key element needed to turn storage area networks
(SANs) into easily managed, scalable networks,"
said Denise Shiffman, vice
president of marketing for Sun Network Storage. "Jiro technology delivers the
first open approach to managing multi-vendor devices in a SAN. The
industry-defined Jiro Technology 1.0 release is a key component of Sun's
any-to-any SAN strategy, which includes interoperability between any servers,
any switches, and any storage."

Based on the Java(TM) 2 platform, Jiro technology increases integration among
storage systems, management software, and network devices. Jiro technology is
the first product implementation of the Federated Management Architecture (FMA)
Specification (
java.sun.com ), which
defines a Java technology-based component architecture and management services
for automated, dynamic network management. The freely available FMA
Specification was developed through an open forum in the Java Community
Process(SM) (JCP) program.

Jiro Technology 1.0 Release Delivers Robust Development Environment

The Jiro Technology 1.0 release delivers a comprehensive, fully supported
environment that simplifies the development and deployment of integrated storage
management solutions. Available with the release are Jiro(TM) Runtime
environment binary code that runs on Java 2 Standard Edition v. 1.2.2, a
Jiro(TM) Software Development Kit (SDK), and Jiro Technology 1.0 source code.
The Jiro technology binaries are available for free redistribution under a
binary code license agreement. The Jiro Technology 1.0 source code is free for
research and development under the Sun Community Source License (SCSL). The Jiro
Technology 1.0 release can be downloaded at jiro.com .

Jiro technology employs a FederatedBeans(TM) component architecture distributed
computing model for the development of dynamic management services with no need
for a dedicated management server for distributed networks. The code also
includes a bundled SNMP manager, GUI-based installation and configuration tools,
and a security one-way hash for data protection through authentication.

The Jiro Software Development Kit has been designed to simplify application
development. The SDK provides easy, preconfigured installation of the Jiro
technology development environment. In addition, it provides complete online
documentation for developers including "how to" explanations and examples. This
summer, Sun also plans to offer two web-based Jiro technology training courses.
An instructor-led course is planned beginning in the fall.

Developers have access to Sun installation and development support as well as a
forum for information exchange with their peers through a bulletin board on
www.jiro.com.

Developers can use the Jiro Technology 1.0 release to participate in the "Build
A Bean" contest that Sun kicked off at the JavaOne(SM) Developer Conference on
June 6, 2000. The contest, which runs through the end of July, gives developers
the opportunity to compete to win Jiro technology logo jackets by building
FederatedBeans components on top of the Jiro Runtime environment. For more
information about the contest, visit www.jiro.com.

Sun will be among the first network storage vendors to deliver Jiro
technology-enabled network storage solutions. In September, Sun plans to
introduce Jiro technology support for the Sun StorEdge(TM) T3 array, the Sun
StorEdge(TM) A5000 array, and Sun StorEdge(TM) Instant Image software. Later in
the year, a Jiro technology-enabled version of Sun StorEdge(TM) Component
Manager software with the ability to manage any device on a storage network
using an SNMP Management Information Base (MIB) is planned for release. The
interoperability of this software and Jiro technology-enabled storage management
software from other vendors will extend to any network environment and will even
extend to the EMC-led Fibre Alliance through a management facade (MF) developed
by Creekpath Systems.

"Creekpath Systems has created a Jiro technology management facade which enables
the fabric integration of Jiro technology-enabled products with the MIB used by
the Fibre Alliance initiative," said Mike Koclanes, president of Creekpath
Systems. "The software was developed to enable Creekpath Systems' internet
storage management services, however we are prepared to offer the MF to other
companies, along with additional development support for many types of devices
using the Fibre Alliance MIB."

In addition, data storage and information management solutions provider Imation
Corp. plans to offer a range of Jiro technology development services for network
storage vendors. "Imation has focused on developing competence in Jiro
technology application development," said Bradley Rubin, Ph.D., chief technology
officer for Imation Data Storage and Information Management. "We are now
offering Jiro technology consulting services including development of
FederatedBeans components for Jiro technology-enabled products. In addition, we
are building software to reduce the cost of ownership of storage via more
automation of storage administrative tasks."

About Jiro Technology

Jiro technology was developed through an industry-wide initiative launched in
December 1998. Its mission is to deliver technology that enables true
integration and platform-independence for the management of storage, servers,
applications and devices on networks. Jiro technology provides developers with
an open environment for creating and deploying storage management services and
controlling, monitoring and configuring related data services. Jiro technology
has been developed through an open forum in the Java Community Process (JCP)
program. For more information about Jiro technology, please visit www.jiro.com.
