What X means is what a convicted individual "deserves" depends on the time and the culture. Would you actively press the State to chop off the arms and legs of a 16-year old caught shoplifting? No? Well, that is what they "deserve" in some other cultures. How about a person who has lied? Do you think their tongue should be cut out? If not, you are out of synch with those cultures that do. If a woman has been accused and found guilty of denying sexual favors to her husband, should she be brutally gang raped? Some cultures think so. After all, she "deserves" it. In essence, you have been programmed by your culture (in this case, the 20th Century American culture) to think and act a certain way. Until you can break out of the box, you have a tendency to parrot society as a whole and objective thinking is difficult.
