Interesting to compare Benn's post with the comments of Greg Mumford from Nortel. Of course, the address on the packet must be read but that can be done at the edge and the content groomed before it is handed off to the optical core.

Jack et al, check out the recent www.nwfusion.com. There are several interesting articles but most noteworthy is a piece on programmable networking chips, a piece on 10 GbE and a comparison of various ISPs. The ASIC vs Programmabel chips set debate will be interesting on a go foreward basis. Let me know your thoughts.
