another take: a 25 basis point increase now is politically better than a 25/50 in august going into the election. and more than one talking head has stated that a 50 folloowed up with a 25 would signal the markets that the fed is done for the year. and no-one wants another month of will they act/won't they act. all round, it makes sense to raise now, although the fear of premature action triggering a recession could prevail. we'll find out in 10 minutes.

follow up... the reports I referred to indicated that the interest rate would have to reach 7 1/4 before the threat of inflation is gone... we are at 6 1/2... so, if the reports have any merit at all, one can expect more rate increases...
