Brazil to split cellular phone market among three companies

andovernews.com

Rio de Janeiro, (EFE via COMTEX) --
Brazil will split a new cellular telephone
band among three companies, local media
reported Thursday.

The National Telecommunications Agency
(ANATEL) regulating entity last week
chose the GSM European system (Mobile
Global System) for the new 1.8 GHz
C-band.

ANATEL advisor Antonio Carlos Valente
da Silva said that three companies would
operate the new frequency and that the
terms of operation would be published in
the next few weeks.

"Each of the companies awarded tenders
will be assigned 15 MHz for their mobile
telephone band," Valenta da Silva told the
local Gazeta Mercantil newspaper.

This band width would enable each of the
three companies to service five million
cellular phones. Valente da Silva said that
Brazil could be divided into 10
geographical areas for the various
concessions.

"If the companies were interested, they
would be able to compete in more than one
area," the advisor said, noting that the
C-band would be "big business."

In May 2000, Brazil had 17.8 million
cellular phones as opposed to only 7.4
million in 1998.

One of the companies interested in the
new mobile phone licenses could be Intelig,
whose president, Fernando Terni, is
thinking of forming a partnership to
participate in the tender.

Intelig already has the concession to
operate long distance telephone calls in the
entire country.

The Brazilian choice of the GSM system
has attracted prospective investors and the
Chinese company Huawei Communication,
which makes connection and transmission
equipment, announced it would invest 30
million dollars in a manufacturing plant in
Brazil. EFE
