Since his 1997 appointment as chief executive, Mr. Roth has piloted Nortel to a 396-per-cent gain in market value, compared with 175 per cent for archrival Lucent Technologies Inc. of Murray Hill, New Jersey.

The result: Nortel had a market capitalization of $195.6 billion U.S. as of yesterday -- compared with $188.3 billion for Lucent.
