Managing investor expectations is an incredibly important job. It is one that is done by winning credibility over a period of years, not being afraid to give the bad news, and managing your executive team such that they are not afraid to give you the bad news in time for the problem to be fixed or faced. Look at how well MSFT and CSCO have done this, especially CSCO. As far as how quarter to quarter reports affect us ggamers, we use the quarterly performance as a set of clues to explore for trends, threats, problems, etc. We also use these reports to see how well management is doing in managing the street's expectations. Management than cannot do that has other problems.
