This whole debacle cost US taxpayers over 2.4 mil. This is absurb, Elian should have been transported back to Cuba with his immeadiate family within 48 hours. Total disgrace wat has transpired. At least it is finnaly over!

I don't think that Cubans will turn their backs on Miami relatives, no, and I'm sure that individual Cubans are grateful for financial support they get from family members in the US. That doesn't mean that they have "bought and paid for" the right to tell their relatives in Cuba what to do. We just saw what happened when a close family was torn apart because of irreconcilable points of view about where and how to live. The issues in the Elian Gonzalez case could become a microcosm of a future time if (hopefully when) Cuba is free enough to make choices about its future.
