Doesn't this sound like classic innovator's dilemma in that the discontinuous innovation has to have a new market created for it?

Thanks for pointing this out. I think this has been lingering at the edge of my thinking about digital cameras for a while now without previously having explicitly come to the fore. I think this is exactly what is happening, i.e., it is not a head to head displacement of film any more than Polaroid was a direct displacement. The initial markets are obviously going to develop around the special features which make the new technology unique and different, not those that make it the same. Only when more mature do we see displacement of real entrenched usage.
