Reagan held the line against the communists. I consider him one of our best presidents because of it. If people got brutalized in the process then so be it.

Insanity.

Reagan and those like him, and the oppressive dictators they supported, were the best allies the third world communists ever had. Rebellion thrives on brutality, especially when that brutality is largely directed at the peaceful opposition.

An example: we supported Ferdinand Marcos in the Philippines because we thought he was an essential bulwark against communism. When Marcos took office, there were around 250 communist guerillas operating in 5 provinces of Central Luzon. When he was driven out the communists had 25,000 men under arms and another 40,000 trained and waiting for arms to be supplied; they were very close to strategic parity. Six years after the country returned to democracy the communist movement was a broken force, and this under Cory Aquino, who Reagan's men suspected of being "soft on communism".

Friends like Marcos were our worst enemies. You cannot defend freedom by subsidizing those who destroy it.

Reagan's extended support of Marcos came very close to creating a Communist dictatorship here. Luckily, the Filipino people took matters into their own hands before that could happen.
