Schmandel - I don't think I suggested that you were a Sun partisan - aside from that I generally agree with your post, which is obviously well informed even down to the use of HP for the key database work, which is exactly the architecture I delivered in one application years back.

MSFT's approach in this market is similar to their approach in various server markets - despite the hype, what they actually target are places where they have more than just price-performance to their advantage. The Sybase replacement market is one such area.

I also agree 100% on the decline at Sybase being linked to the introduction of the PowerSoft team - I was pretty close to Sybase when that was happening. But I would suggest that Sybase had already painted themselves into a box when they brought out System10 way before it was baked, and the resulting business disruption pretty much demolished their internal focus, helped in no small degree by the fact that they were hiring anyone who was actually breathing (and some who may not have been) in the "Cougar" drive to get a stable product out. The PowerSoft guys had an easy job after that...

And while MS may not have too many support people who can spell SQL, Compaq does, and my experience with their support in everything from network design to performance tuning has been excellent.
