Jon, It turns out that cryptic comment/question

I talked to my areaa globalstar phone company and they said they are sending out a letter as to their client's service being taken over by Globalstar and then there will be no need for a yearly contract with the local company???????????

from siliconinvestor.com.

does make sense.

I just talked to a representative from GMPCS, my G* service provider. As of July 16 (or 15 or 17, memory fades), Globalstar will be the service provider of air time. GMPCS will sell G* phones but not minutes. At the customer's option, an existing contract will continue to be serviced by GMPCS or transfered to Globalstar. But once the contract ends, GMPCS will no longer sell minutes.

I don't know if this change is unique to GMPCS or applies to all G* service providers.
