PCs, Mobile Phones Continue to Set Demand Pace for ICs, EIAJ Says
June 30, 2000 (TOKYO) -- The Electronic Industries Association of Japan (EIAJ) has published a forecast on the top ten electronic devices that will shape and support demand for microchips in 2006.

The kingpin source of projected demand is desktop PCs, with 34 percent of the total, followed by digital cellular phones (16 percent), smart cards (8 percent), notebook PCs (7 percent), and PC servers (4 percent).

Research work was commissioned to IDC Japan, and the results were compiled by an EIAJ 's committee on semiconductor studies and statistics.

This forecast identifies the projected top ten electronic devices and equipment items, out of 47 items that will likely account for 70 percent of the overall demand for semiconductors in 2006. It was revealed in an EIAJ forecast report on the world's electronic devices and semiconductor markets.

The following items rank from number six to ten: (6) video games (3 percent); (7) HDDs (3 percent); (8) LAN switches (2 percent); (9) switching equipment for stations (2 percent); and (10) smart handheld devices (2 percent).

In comparison with 1999, the rise of smart cards and video game machines is especially notable.
