I am not a Titanic maven, I wouldn't know anything at all about it except that Nick loved the recent movie, and wanted to see the exhibit in Halifax. One thing I learned, which isn't really surprising, was that in the beginning people were reluctant to get into lifeboats because they didn't want to leave the ship, which they thought was literally unsinkable. I agree with your suggestions, but you must realize that unless the raft was able to hold a person above the water, it was useless. Many men got into the water wearing life belts, but the water was so cold that they died of hypothermia, not drowning. One poignant fact was that John Jacob Astor's body was found with a fortune in bank notes in his pockets. He could have bought his way onto a boat, but didn't. I imagine he was a good swimmer and did not realize that the cold was insurmountable by strong will.
