As I understand it, Chromatis also incorporates something called Selective WDM which limits the costs of bringing DWDM to sites that don't need it.This is big, no one else has it. Also, their multiprotocol functions within wavelengths. Most boxes require a separate wavelength per protocol (TDM, IP, ATM). STS1 to STS12 granularity, capacities are unmatched, etc. I think Dan Smith is being a spoiler here... The Chromatis Metropolosomething 2000/4000 series boxes hit Sycamore where they live.

Ignitus is a much smaller scale box with no need for DWDM. If a CLEC can't decide between bringing optics to every site via a WaveStar or managing bandwidth via ATM and a PSAX product... Voila! You get both interfaces in an Ignitus box....

Ken, Now there is a subject that I agree with. I have been openly vocal about that acquisition. The people at Ignitus have also been screaming, though since they are guaranteed vesting in 16 months they will all just flee. What I wonder about is what business it is of SCMR's? From what I hear, SCMR was interested in Chromatis but was out bid by LU. That makes Dan look like he is choking on sour grapes. Instead, SCMR bought a company that is literally a house of cards located 100 miles away. I am willing to bet that Sirocco will not deliver product anywhere near their target date. The last product that they sold (Sahara...also to Dan and Desh) did not ship until last year. That is only 2.5 years or so late. Internally at SCMR, I understand that there are some that were interested in paying far less for the company and then only to get the engineers locked up.

additionally, lightreading has had an issue against LU from its' onset. That seems strange since LU is certainly a major player in optical networking...

Ken, After reading the article, I have a few comments. It is interesting that Dan will not comment on a rumor, yet then throws a stone at LU. It is interesting that he of course touts his own acquisition. It should be noted that Cascade never made a successful acquisition. At no time during Dan's tenure did an acquired product actually ship. In both cases, the technology evaluation was flawed and in both cases the product did not come close to what was assumed and promised. It is also interesting that he has distanced himself from other start ups in the equity game at williams. It is widely known that several at williams were able to retire or move to a new venture after the SCMR IPO.

To end his interview, he jumps all over a competitor about which he knows little. Huber has more optical expertise than anyone at SCMR. It will be interesting to get a look under the hood of Corvis.
