I don't know yet what Ben's GPA will be, obviously, because he just started high school, but he's already got a "C" because he took Algebra in 7th grade, which is two years ahead of the rest of the kids, but had a tough time adjusting to 7th grade. I finally had to eliminate computer games and video games completely and that brought up his grades, but the Algebra grade remained a "C." If I had known it would count as a high school grade, I would have made him retake it in summer school. So I do know what you mean about the competitive classes. However, if I may brag on him a little, he just took the SAT again in 9th grade, and got a 1350, 650 verbal, 700 math, which isn't bad for a 15-year-old. So I hope the SAT will open doors that the grades won't (B plus average so far)(I expect he won't have a hard time getting into an engineering school)(the part of the verbal that he did poorly on required him to read a long first person narrative about a dream and analyze it). As for UT's admissions policies, I think it's a long-standing policy at public colleges to admit more students than you plan to graduate. The old saw about "look at the student on your left, look at the student on your right, at the end of the first year one of you three won't be here" certainly applied to LSU.
