Polycrystallin SiC has been around for a long time. It has assorted industrial uses and is the raw material for Cree's monocrystallin SiC. I'm no engineer, but from what I can determine the monocrystallin form is needed for most electronic procceses. The micropipe problem doesn't sound like it is inherent to the monocrystallin form , so if it is an engineering problem a solution will be found eventually. CREE has always been volatile, most of the moves seem to have little fundamental basis.
