NTAP--Network Appliance and Lionbridge Team to Provide Multilingual Internet Services
BUSINESS WIRE - June 29, 2000 08:14
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jun 29, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

Language Translation Application to Utilize iCAP Standard to Enable Value-Added Solutions

Lionbridge Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:LIOX), a leading provider of multilingual Internet solutions and Network Appliance, Inc. (Nasdaq:NTAP), the leading provider of network-attached data access and content management solutions today announced plans to jointly develop value-added services utilizing the Internet Content Adaptation Protocol (iCAP). Under the agreement, the two companies will use the standard protocol to integrate Lionbridge's multilingual Internet solutions with Network Appliance's network caching appliances. The iCAP-enabled application will provide businesses, governments, educational institutions and consumers with a customized service that translates any web content into the users native language.

iCAP is an open protocol that enables communication between edge content devices, such as Web caches, and application servers that modify content for the edge content device. Companies that use these scalable, content-aware, intelligent applications will be able to create new revenue opportunities by delivering value-added services such as family-friendly online services and prioritized traffic management. These solutions, built for large ISPs, online advertising networks, enterprise/corporate networks, portals and Web sites, will be available in the second half of 2000.

Network Appliance will use iCAP to integrate Lionbridge's LionTrack(TM) technology with Network Appliance's network caching appliances. The iCAP-enabled service will offer automated translations that provide the gist of Web content and detailed translation services provided by human translators over the Internet. Initial service offerings will include language translation between English and French, Spanish, German, Chinese and Japanese.

Using the "response modification" feature of iCAP, the Network Appliance(TM) cache will recognize the Web user's native language and ask whether the foreign content requested should be translated into the user's native language. If the content is to be translated the iCAP-enabled cache will forward or "vector" the web content to a language translation server hosted by Lionbridge for language translation. Content vectoring from the caching server to the language translation server eliminates Internet performance bottlenecks and increases server response times. Network Appliance caches can also locally store translated content eliminating the need to repeat translations for different users.

"By using iCAP to integrate Lionbridge's Internet language translation capabilities with the NetCache(TM) platform, companies will have a new way to communicate globally in multiple languages," said Amit Pandey, director of NetCache for Network Appliance. "Lionbridge' ability to translate Web content will help break language barriers and open new markets for e-commerce and facilitate the exchange of ideas on a global basis."

"As wireless and WAP enabled hand-held devices take hold, global companies are looking for an effective way to serve dynamic, multilingual content across an expanding range of platforms and formats," said Rory Cowan, CEO of Lionbridge. "Through this collaboration with Network Appliance and building on the ICAP open standard, we will now provide our clients with a way to improve performance while extending their global reach."
