Wilmington, Delaware, June 27 (Bloomberg) -- Motorola Inc., the world's second-largest mobile
telephone maker, settled a patent infringement lawsuit with French rival Alcatel SA over cellular
phone technology.

Two units of Paris-based Alcatel accused Schaumburg, Illinois- based Motorola in March 1998 of
misappropriating inventions protected by three of Alcatel's U.S. patents awarded in 1996.

A non-jury trial in Wilmington, Delaware, federal court was to begin
this month before U.S. District Judge Gregory Sleet, though Motorola
and Alcatel reached a confidential agreement to settle the suit and
Sleet dismissed the case.

''Each party shall bear its own costs, expenses and attorneys' fees in
connection with this action,'' the companies' lawyers said in court
papers.

Earlier this month, Alcatel units sued San Jose, California- based
Cisco Systems Inc. in federal court in Sherman, Texas, alleging
violations of data network patents.

Shares of Motorola, which reported $30.9 billion in 1999 sales, rose
3/16 to 30 7/16. Alcatel, with $24.5 billion in 1999 sales, fell 1.1 euros
to 69.9 in Paris.

Hey Zbyslaw, I have the details on the PaineWebber upgrade...I'll post them later tonight as I get time. Upgrade related to their belief that ALA will likely spin off optical components business.

Great day here<g>.
