Qualcomm lays off 200 employees, 3 pct of workforce

SAN DIEGO, June 29 (Reuters) - Wireless communications technology developer Qualcomm Inc. <QCOM.O> said on Thursday it was firing some 200 employees, or nearly 3 percent of its 7,000-member workforce.

"We had just about 200 positions eliminated," Qualcomm spokeswoman Christine Trimble told Reuters, after trading had closed on the Nasdaq.

Qualcomm's shares lost 2-1/16 to 61-1/2 each, to its lowest levels seen this year.

"We conducted an evaluation of the skill set of employees against the company's needs and future business needs and made adjustments," she added.

The company recently announced it expected reduced orders from key Asia market, South Korea, but Trimble said the layoffs were unrelated and were part of an effort to streamline Qualcomm's operations. The bulk of the layoffs would be in San Diego, she added.

One exQ employee I know says that this happens at least twice a year, often times with numbers greater than 200.

Well, things may be a bit different now since QCOM has sloughed off so many labor-intensive businesses in the past 20 months. They should already be free of Dead Wood. Would be interesting to know if the current cuts are related to G*.
