The original (Joy's) BSD stack was much inferior to 4.4, finished about a decade after he was gone. :O

As for Java development, you're probably barking up the wrong tree (read my column about "flat" HTML... hehe), but I would say no, FreeBSD is not a superior Java platform to Linux, but then I don't think that Solaris will ever have to worry about either one of them.

As a pure Internet server, BSD has Solaris beat... for JSP or whatever your particular Java development project may be, Solaris is far superior, as you know. ;o
