Seattle -- the demo version

SEATTLE -- Many things are required for a successful entrepreneurial community. The interdependent concentration of money and people is helped along by factors like nearby educational institutions and a culture that supports experimentation and aggressiveness. A nice climate doesn't hurt either.

I happen to be in Seattle on one of those rare, nice days, when the residents can lift their faces to the sky and feel warm sun instead of the more typical cold rain. It's "recruiting weather," quips David Billstrom, managing partner of FBR CoMotion, a new venture firm here in town.
David has just moved into a new office building, and not everything is in place yet. But one thing is solid here: Seattle has a tight venture community, smaller and more chummy than in Silicon Valley.

The VCs and angels I met here all talked about how they spend more time evaluating investments, how they don't fall over each other to rush into deals. But some of the entrepreneurs I met say that, with some exceptions, they prefer the combination of expertise and aggressiveness they get from Silicon Valley VCs. However, they keep their headquarters up here; the weather may be grim, but Seattle has other charms to compensate.

Yes, it is true...Curt Cobain is not dead. He is alive and well posing as a dot com VC in the greater Seattle area.
