Actually, he said he had to reclaim the memory from the kernel (that's where most operating systems manage their memory for applications). The most likely cause of a memory leak in this situation is the app (in his case, it is most likely either the Java VM or the Java application). If you'd like, I'm sure I can provide you with pointers to more information on the topic.
