FIRST OPTICAL VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORK TO DEUTSCHE TELEKOM
Paris, June 30, 2000 - Today the platform for the world's most advanced scientific communication
network has been handed over by Deutsche Telekom to the German Research Network Association
(DFN). Alcatel, the world leader in optical networking, has contributed the essential technical
elements to the network which will connect all universities and research laboratories in Germany. As a
world premiere, G-WIN deploys the Alcatel end-to-end Virtual Private Network (VPN) manager system,
a revolutionary web-based network management concept, the first and only one of this class available
in the market today.

Alcatel's VPN manager - Optinex 1355VPN - allows VPN owners to allocate their virtual private
network resources from their premises, using an ordinary PC. Based on standard Internet technology,
the system offers unprecedented functionality, such as end-to-end bandwidth-on-demand capability
and the freedom of managing VPN networks in real-time while closely monitoring their quality down
to single bit errors detected on the transmission line.

The G-WIN network, German-wide, also entails the deployment of the top-edge OPTINEX Metro
DWDM, which connects each University - with a maximum bandwidth capacity of 320 Gbps - to
Deutsche Telekom PoPs (Points of Presence). Bandwidth optimization on the DWDM link is ensured
by high capacity SDH Multi-service Gateways, where the IP traffic is aggregated, thus also providing
the fastest possible traffic-protection time. The G-WIN network offers the German academic and
research community the fastest and most economic broadband platform for ultra-high speed
multimedia communications.

"The increasing demand for multimedia and e-business applications requires higher and
more sophisticated network performances, as well as instantaneous bandwidth allocation
capability", stated Christian Reinaudo, President of Alcatel's Optics Group. "Deutsche Telekom is
the first operator to empower its final customers in such a revolutionary way, and we
are proud that this breakthrough solution was developed by Alcatel."

About Optinex 1355VPN
Optinex 1355VPN allows end-users (i.e. medium and large enterprises) to manage their private
telecommunication networks from their premises, via an Internet browser installed on an ordinary PC,
which is connected to the Operator's network management system and provides simultaneous access
to a set of pre-defined services. The functionality offered - i.e. VPN resources definition, connectivity
provisioning, fault reporting and monitoring of performance parameters in the connectivity services -
permit end-users to intervene directly and in real time in the management of their VPNs. A change in
bandwidth allocation between different access points is fast and easy to implement. These features
allow end-users to drastically decrease the service set-up time and quickly verify that operators are
supplying the required quality of service.

About Alcatel
In November 1999, RHK, a leading telecommunications analyst firm, said that Alcatel holds a 21%
share - the number one position - of the world's total transport market, which comprises submarine and
terrestrial transmission systems. RHK noted that Alcatel's market-leading 37% market share in the
submarine networks segment helped secure the top position in the total transport market. In addition,
RHK found that Alcatel commands a 37% share of the digital cross-connect systems (DCS) segment.
Cross-connect systems contain the enabling technology for operators to offer high bandwidth services.
Alcatel is also cited as the global leader in terms of DWDM market share for the global market
encompassing both terrestrial and submarine applications. Alcatel builds next generation networks,
delivering integrated end-to-end voice and data networking solutions to established and new carriers,
as well as enterprises and consumers worldwide. With 120,000 employees and sales of EURO 23
billion in 1999, Alcatel operates in more than 130 countries.
