Smart cards don't have all the financial data, they hold cash and/or security mechanisms. They can be plugged into cellphones or handhelds or PCs or vending machines or door locks.

Microsoft, Sun/Java, and the cell phone makers and handheld makers are planning the smart card slot/reader.

The government (GSA) is standardizing on smart cards--this is a huge part of government. American Express and Citibank have new, big plans as well.
