JC - well, regarding the PDC, maybe you should GO to one rather than relying on what you read. The last one I attended was 1999 - there were close to 10,000 developers. In a little over 3 days, it was possible to attend over 30 in depth sessions - but you had to pick your interests carefully as there were over 200 sessions. You could go in-depth on almost any subject. Every session I attended was PACKED - most had lots of folks standing.

Far from being laughed off the stage, the speakers were the actual development managers in most cases, and the questions were specific and drove to deep technical points. Nearly half of each session was discussion. I would say the questions were challenging and highlighted serious issues about the particular topics - after all, that's what these sessions were for, and these were professional developers who had paid a lot to get that access.
