Eight Fans Crushed to Death at Pearl Jam Concert
dailynews.yahoo.com

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - Eight people were crushed to death at a rock concert in Denmark when a
huge crowd pressed forward against the stage during a performance by the U.S. group Pearl Jam, Danish
police said on Saturday.

The disaster occurred in muddy and rainy conditions just before midnight on Friday. Earlier the police put
the death toll at nine, saying all the victims were men. Twenty-six needed hospital treatment.

Police said they were still working to identify the dead and had no information on the nationalities of the casualties.

Police said the crowd pressed forward uncontrollably, crushing the victims against the open-air stage at the annual outdoor
Roskilde summer rock festival near the Danish capital Copenhagen.

In a statement Pearl Jam called the disaster a ``horrible nightmare'' and said they were devastated by the deaths.

``There are absolutely no words to express our anguish in regard to the parents and loved ones of those precious lives that
were lost,'' the band said in a statement posted on their Sony Music web site.

``It is still unclear as to what actually occurred, but it seemed to be random and sickeningly quick...it
doesn't make sense.

Witnesses told Denmark's Ritzau news agency the Pearl Jam players had repeatedly asked the audience
to move back from the stage to ease the massive crush against it before the disaster occurred.

``At one point a group of some 15 spectators collapsed en masse in front of the rostrum and people
behind them began uncontrollably tumbling over them,'' a witness said.

``It was obvious what was going to happen.''

Roskilde is some 35 km (22 miles) west of Copenhagen. The festival draws tens of thousands of rock fans from all over
Europe every summer.

Another rock concert scheduled to take place after Pearl Jam was canceled by the organizers to show respect for the dead and
held one minute's silence. But the festival continued on other stages throughout the night, the daily newspaper
Jyllands-Posten reported on its web site.

Rescue service Falck told Reuters nine of its ambulances had been sent to the festival site to collect casualties
and that operations were over by early Saturday morning.

Organizers said the festival, attended by some 70,000 fans, would be continue under tightened security.
