Amy, RE: Isn't a consistent earnings stream the key? (which it appears Intel is achieving). And doesn't that solve your isolated example of a one-time-only earnings?

Intel Capital is in the venture cap business. The true earnings cannot be timed, they are dependent to a large degree upon stock market condiditons.

If Intel Capital does indeed report a consistent earnings stream, then this will clearly be a manipulated number. Stock sales will be dependent not only on the price of a stock but also the gain/loss that will be reported. If this happened, I would most likely give Intel Capital a greater discount than I earlier would have thought prudent, because managing the bottom line in this business does not generate the best long term rewards.

Thankfully, Intel Capital does not appear to feel this need, as the large gain in MU in this quarter indicates.
