Because Brazil appears to be headed toward GSM for the immediate future, I am wondering-- Does anyone have a decent source for an estimate of the size of the potential wireless telephone market there? Or in other words how many GSM phones might Nokia and others sell in Brazil in the next few years.

This link gives hints with a few numbers.

andovernews.com

"In May 2000, Brazil had 17.8 million cellular phones as opposed to only 7.4 million in 1998."

But I have not seen any forward estimates.

Certainly the country is large enough that it could have an impact. Their economy is the largest in South America. Their GDP is estimated at over 1 trillion in US dollars and their population is about 170 million.

I apologize to the Qualcomm contingent for intruding with a post that has no significance for Qualcomm, but Maurice assures me that he is not insecure so I have some basis for believing that it will not make you uncomfortable. If am wrong and this message causes you to have an uncontrollable urge to post something to reassure yourself that Qualcomm will succeed and Nokia will fail, may I suggest going over to one of the three Qualcomm threads and posting it there.
