lml, some very good points you bring up. The one ingredient that you may have missed is ATM which is still staunchly ensconced in the fabric of ILEC deployments of NGDLC, DSL and PONs. And while this appears to be antithetical to the direction of 'everything over IP, it nonetheless is the direction that most ILECs, and a majority of CLECs, are taking, borrowing from the full service area network reference model (FSAN-RM), anyway.

In turn, the other services simply ride on top of the ATM.. such as MPEG Video, Frame Relay, Internet IP, voice, and so on.
