I wonder, is it possible that people who live in New York live more interesting/complicated lives than the rest of us? Sort of like people who live in England, or Los Angeles. Some sort of critical mass is achieved by the contiguity of others, I suppose. Whereas most places there just aren't enough complicated people to achieve sufficient critical mass for a really good messed-up life.
