"Huh? It screams at the kids from the back porch? Now you're talking"

lol! perhaps a voice recording of eric benhamou boring the children to death until they finally relent and come inside, would be a big seller.

i think that the writer of this article is somewhat to blame, however, for what you have astutely termed, "a bunch of solutions in search of a problem". the home automation part of 3com's 'digital home' strategy will always end up sounding a bit corny when they take the route of what sounds alarmingly like the old 1950's 'little lady in the kitchen' ads. you know the ones, where mom has an apron on, and high heels, and she always looks like she is dancing with her refrigerator door?

perhaps as more of our workforce is able to stay at home and connect over networks to their jobs and to entertainment sources (kerbango and high-speed modems for net-tv) and to widening circles of personal contacts, maybe then home automation functions such as climate control, system maintenance and repair (testing the heater, are the lawn sprinks adjusted right?), and yes... meal preparation, will become more desirable features.

but until then, it (home automation) comes off sounding like more of a stretch, largely because it is a glimpse into the future defined by today's standards.
