Original Mad Dog,

I somewhat expected a 300 word reply to a simple yes/no question, so I was not surprised at the length of your reply.

I, as it seems most people, believe SI made some grievous errors in the implementation of the upgrade and the consequent handling of the problems that arose.

I'm not a programmer nor am I privy to the inner workings of SI, so I'm unable to judge whether the remedy was correct or not, though I have my suspicions. It's easy to make comments/judgements with the benefit of hindsight, without full knowledge of the situation, and to be an armchair quarterback, but when your ass is on firing line the world changes immensely.

I think a class action lawsuit is the most absurd thing I've heard of arising from this fiasco. Even though people's log-in names were compromised for a time, at NO time were passwords displayed. I can't believe somebody is going to try and figure out how to log-on using someone else's identity. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm not that paranoid.

In your own words you said a lawsuit probably would not help you or I one bit, but it would teach them a lesson. Isn't this what the capitalistic marketplace is supposed to achieve? Have you or anybody else been "wronged" or "harmed"? Not that I can see. Disappointed? Yes. Inconvenienced? Yes. Has SI been embarrased? Yes, most definitely.

If you don't like the going's on at SI, then vote with your feet and choose another service. There are several available. I complained when the Datek banner was placed and when Classic SI was phased out. I've complained about outages and performance issues, but I choose to stay here because of the collection of people that offer their insight, expertise, and opinion on many issues. So, I will put up with inconveniences until a time it is not worth it to me.

In my very humble opinion, a huge problem in today's society are the results that have manifested over time by the ambulance chasers, malpractice vultures, and other legal harrassment issues.

First you complain about the lawyers "cleansing" SI's PR, and then you advocate using the legal system to "teach them a lesson", even though it wouldn't help. Is this what our legal system has turned into?

You complained Mr. Busby didn't tell us the truth, as you had surmised from reading between the lines from his statement, but that he fed us a line a bull that had been cleansed by the lawyers. Why do you suppose that is? Could it be because there are pit-bull class lawyers ready to pounce on every little thing?

I, too, was contacted by Carrie Lee from the Wall Street Journal to see if I wanted to contribute to a story. I don't feel the situation warranted such a "news" story and I declined to participate. I'd prefer they do an article on the benefits people have received from being members of such an extended online community. People from all walks of life are able to participate in a forum that has been unheard of and unavailable in previous societies.

As we head into the Independence Day weekend and the honoring of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, we must ask ourselves how can I help in the effort to maintain our independence. Relying on lawyers and reporters to make things "right" is not what I have in mind. In a perfect world, maybe, but not today.

Self government does not work without self discipline.

As you have stated your opinions, I have stated mine. I don't feel the Piffer OT thread is the place to hold these discussions, but since you seemed bent on doing so by posting the class action proposal, I felt my reply was necessary. If even only to satisfy my own ego and position.

FWIW, I have given my 2 cents.

Have a nice holiday,

arno
