ALCATEL AND KINGSTON VISION SIGN DEAL TO EXPAND ADVANCED BROADBAND TELEVISION SERVICE
Kingston Interactive Television digital services underline the potential of DSL
------------------------------------------------------------
Below is extention of Kingstom Comm. 150 million pounds
investment, commited last fall to Newbridge 3dsl technology to
provide TV abd Video over copper wire, in addition to voice and internet.
They use Newbride 350 access platform, 36170 ATM switch and
technology form affiliate i-Magic.
-----------------------------------------------------

Paris, July 3, 2000 - Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA, NYSE ALA), the world wide market leader in DSL
technologies, announced today a Euro 20.9 million expansion of its business with Kingston Vision,
the broadband networking subsidiary of Kingston Communications ((LSE: KCOM). The new investment
will use Alcatel DSL technology to bring some of Europe's most advanced commercially available
interactive digital services within reach of thousands of consumers on the east coast of England.

The demand for services provided by Hull-based Kingston Interactive Television (KIT), which began
in January 2000, has been very strong. Today's deal marks the beginning of a rapid increase in
capacity to support an additional 30,000 customers. KIT will be rolled out to serve all 14 exchanges
in the Kingston Communications' East Yorkshire network, ahead of plans to expand the service into
Leeds later this year.

Subscribers to the services are offered 55 channels of digital broadcast television, covering free-to-air
and premium subscription channels. There is email and high speed, 'always on' Internet access
available via the TV, and a free local information service. In a first for Europe, KIT is also pioneering
true on-demand viewing of movies, music videos and TV programmes, allowing customers to create
their own viewing schedules.

Uniquely, all of these services are delivered over the same copper wires that already connect all
homes to the telephone network, and are available simultaneously with normal telephone calls

Pearse Flynn, president of Alcatel's Carrier Networking Group said: "Sheer demand from Kingston's
customers goes to show how important broadband entertainment and information services
are to consumers. Alcatel has a solution that provides telephone companies not just with
bandwidth, but with highly desirable revenue-ready services as well. Until now these new
services were the sole domain of cable operators'.

Working closely with Kingston Vision and others, Alcatel has brought together into one package the
technologies, applications and professional services that allow a telephone company to offer
advanced digital services over the existing copper 'local loop' that connects all homes to the
telephone network. Each service represents a completely new and significant revenue stream to the
operator, as well as the opportunity to become a 'portal' to the new generation of digital information
and entertainment services.

Matt Child, managing director of Kingston Vision said: '3dSL enables us to give our customers
access to some of the most exciting new broadband applications in the world - ahead
of the rest of the UK and Europe.'

Fastlane was a Newbridge affiliate!!!!!!!

Friday 30 June 2000
California company pays $100M U.S. for Newbridge affiliate
Kristin Goff
The Ottawa Citizen

FastLane Technologies Inc. agreed to team up with Quest Software Inc. in a $100-million U.S. deal that should fuel the company's rapid growth.

FastLane's acquisition by Quest Software of Irvine, California, for a combination of stock and cash will help Quest get a bigger foothold in the Microsoft market and provide the resources and clout for FastLane to expand its sales of directory-management software for Microsoft platforms.

"When we looked at Quest and the alignment in our cultures and business visions, it was huge opportunity to accelerate our plan," said Jan Kaminski, president of FastLane, which has marketing offices in Ottawa and headquarters in Halifax. Its management will remain in place and it will operate as the FastLane division of Quest, once the deal in final in about one month.

FastLane has 190 employees, including 60 in Ottawa, 90 in Halifax and the balance in several smaller national and international offices.

While FastLane couldn't estimate expansion targets for itself as a new division of Quest, Mr. Kaminski said the company doesn't see any change over the near term in the 200-per-cent growth in its business recently.

"We don't see that change in any of that near term, if anything there's probably potential for higher growth as we leverage the mass that Quest has," he said.

The FastLane division, which will manage all Quest's Canadian operations, expects to increase employment in Ottawa, Halifax and elsewhere but has not defined specific targets yet.

Quest, with sales of $71 millionU.S. in 1999, has more than 1,000 employees and a market capitalization of $4.5 billion U.S. Its shares were unchanged yesterday at $53 1/8.

FastLane is a Microsoft-certified provider of directory management software, including a utility that allows large organizations to move files from Netware file servers to Windows 2000 when they upgrade to that system. Quest, a large player in providing solutions to enhance performance and reliability sees its acquisition as a way to increase its presence in the Microsoft space.

FastLane, a private company, a Newbridge affiliate since 1996, had considered an initial public share offering this year to fuel what it expects to be huge growth as Microsoft deploys Windows 2000 and Active Directory in its largest infrastructure upgrade yet. But after meeting with Quest, it opted for a deal that gives it access to a larger publicly traded company much sooner, Mr. Kaminski said. The deal is the third consolidation of North American companies operating in the directory management software space within the past six months.
