To use the car analogy, why couldn't someone sell him the Windows98 software off of a defunct machine like someone parting out a vehicle?

Although they must exist, I cannot think of another example of tying individual components of a device to that specific device for the life of the component. It is economically inefficient if nothing else. The capitalistic niche filled by the used-parts industry is absent in this case.

These are the type of "non-marketforces" manipulations which has them under suspicion.
