Papayas are all right, i suppose, if a person doesn't have any mangos from the tree in the corner of our yard. Here's hoping that Fox is pragmatic enough to realise that mexicanos were voting out the PRI much more than they were handing him a mandate for religious/social conservatism ... and yes, he has to walk a fine line between a search for justice and a witchhunt - he can't let the more gross examples of corruption go uncovered, but he can't lead the nation into a preoccupation with the past either, there is much more to do ... one part of his rhetoric i like is the emphasis on education, it is time imho to sanctify Vasconcelos and take his vision into this century. It is reflecting well on the PRI when Zedillo and Labastida concede with grace ... Here is an article which describes quite well our ejido - washingtonpost.com ... we are several hours to the west, and perhaps a little more comfortable, but it sounds very much the same in things political. On the question of the secret ballot - Even when people really are convinced that their ballot can be secret [and many never will be convinced, they believe that the PRI knows everything, and the caudillos make little effort to disabuse them of that thought], they will still demonstrate to the jefes that they have voted PRI ..... and i don't think this will change with this election, even bringing as it does the realisation that other parties can indeed win the presidency ... i can see a situation developing where the PRI becomes the party of the rural ... 40% of the population lives in centres of 15.000 or less, and they have better voter turnout than in the cities ... if Fox now neglects basic government services in those PRI constituencies, he will be making a huge mistake.
