In every conflict BOTH sides are fighting for their "rights"- the colonists wanted the "right" to control themselves (and not have to give tax money to England, when it was their perception that England wasn't doing much for them- the lament of a certain percentage of all colonists, in all colonies, I think)- the loyalists wanted the "right" TO be governed by the crown and wished to remain part of the British Empire, a not unreasonable wish. It certainly did Canada no harm to stay a subject. We know who won but was it so important? Who knows? What if what it what if. Did you ever see the skit- "What if the Romans had had machine guns....?". I think it was on SNL. Patriots, Patriotism. It's an interesting concept. I like living here, but Canada would suit me just as well, and several other countries I can think of. I love the folks who say "You're not a PATRIOT, then you should LEAVE" as if there were some sort of requirement that to be an American you msut also be a fanatic and overlook the faults of America and the good points of other countries. Thank goodness the vast silent mass of Americans are moderate and rather lazy.
