I would warm-up before each round on the practice range and the putting green AND (most important) I would go directly back to the practice range and putting green right after the round and work on what failed during the round.

That would help anyone find the way to lower handicaps...practice! Self-hypnosis would also help almost anybody to focus on the right things during a round. I'm over 50 and and wondering if there is a second childhood in golf. If not, I guess I better move to the senior tees in order to "improve".

I guess I was lucky in that I started playing very early in life. My development was more natural. Learn, play a lot of golf, get better....

I have not tried self hypnosis. Cannot comment there. But warming up is a huge advantage for any level of golfer. Not only to get your "swing" working but also to lube up the muscles. Golf can cause injury if one is not ready to swing.

I can not remember the last time I went to a range or practice green after a round. I am sure it would help. Thanks for the reminder. ;-)

JBC: I also thought I was about to break the low 90's wall in that I KNEW I was striking the ball better than ever and really making things happen with respect to my short game...thought I was moments away and started to hit a few rounds in the high 80's...now (last 2 weeks or so), I've digressed into this spastic hitter of the ball and just had two rounds in the high 90's, with little or no views on what's changed in my swing...I know I'm in trouble based on the fact that I just sent away for some dopey Moe Norman Natural Golf Swing video and also bought 3 Pure Spin wegdes...now please, don't anyone try to tell me I trying to buy a better game:)!!,,,any thoughts...also, anyone else with an interest or experiences with Natural Golf program??...finally, how did you get into the self hypnosis stuff and any thoughts on where to start...I'm at the stage where I would be willing to swing a dead chicken around my head each morning if I knew that would help!

I am still stuck in the 80-84 range. Been there for a couple of months. I was on my way to being a 70's player, but a car wreck sort of changed that, and a lot of other things for me.

I went from shooting 38-41 for any given nine to 47-52 for a couple of years.

After a while, and a lot of work, I was able to start hitting the golf ball like I used to. For me improvement was based on three things.

1. Getting a grip on the macho bs that would drive my game, and produce ugly scores. I was lucky in that I had a fair amount of arm strength and I thought the object was to produce long ball flight. The first step to getting better for me was to give up this belief and start producing repeatable golf shots. Gone are the days that I would hit it 275-290 into the right woods. Now I use a 5 wood on most holes and settle for a nice 230-245, depending on the wind. When the hole calls for it, or I have a chance to get there in two, then the driver or the three comes out. This practice alone saved me 3 shots per nine.

Second was a committment to hitting a draw and aiming for it. I try to take the right side out of play and leave myself with an acceptable position if the ball goes straight, or an excellent position if the draw takes. This took 2-3 stokes off a nine for me.

Last was a plan to play smart golf that is determined before I even start the round. I will look at the card and make my club selection for the entire round. The only time I will change this is if I discover that a certain shot is not there, or my normal swing is not happening. For example the last two days I have been hitting a fade. This is not my norm and a shot that I cannot produce on will. This forced me to change a couple of my club selections as a fade on a few of the holes would have been real trouble. A big part of this play smart for me is to stop trying to hit the 50/50 (or less) shots. I no longer try to draw a 3 iron 210 over the trees. I no longer try to hit my "Seve" 5 iron out of the woods over the sand bunker (a shot that pays a whole lot less that 50/50). I actually started thinking on the course. This is worth between 1-10 shots per nine, depending on how much trouble I have found.

I also practice smart and with a purpose. I used to just bang balls into space. Now I have a target, a goal, and a system for my range time.

Thats about it. Going to bust 80 this month. Just a matter of time.

Going from 90+ to plus four in a year is pretty impressive. I agree with you on the self hypnosis idea. I just call it the "zone". I have been there before, and I can get so focused that I don't really hear anything else when I prepare to strike that ball. This is quite a feat as train tracks run by the third hole at one of the courses I play a lot. I have honestly hit my shot and then noticed the vibration and incredible noise from the train. I wish I could get this focused everyday, but I cannot. Maybe someday.
