Just checked out the short interest on AFCI - according to Viwes (http://www.viwes.com/invest/shorts/query.cgi) the short interest climbed in June to 1,550k from 720k in May.

I really don't think being short is too smart - anyone have any insights to share on the short activity?

First Security Van Kasper expects AFCI beat Q2 EPS est,tgt $100
Advanced Fibre Communications, Inc.* (NASD: AFCI $46 11/16, Buy)
Price Target: $100.00

While it is likely that Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: LU $55 1/8, Hold) will
become a supplier to WinStar Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: WCII, $38 5/16, not
rated) we do not view this as a negative for Advanced Fibre Communications
(AFC). We spoke to industry sources and strongly believe that WinStar's
relationship with AFC will continue to be very strong and that WinStar's
purchases of AFC's UMC 1000 will continue to be "massive" and growing for the
foreseeable future.

We think it likely that GTE Corp. (NYSE: GTE $62 1/4, not rated) may become a
significant customer of AFC by next year. If this happens, it would be
incremental to most analysts' financial models. GTE was a $50 million account
for AFC in 1997.

We are very comfortable with our Q2 EPS estimate of $0.09 and expect the
company to beat the consensus EPS estimate of $0.09.

We are reiterating our Buy rating with a 12-month price target of $100, or
133x our FY02 EPS estimate of $0.75.
