New York, July 4 (SUNA)- Sudan has officially been nominated as African representative at the Security Council for the period 2001 till 2002, said Sudan envoy to the United Nations, Ambassador Al-Fatih Irrwah.

The move is regarded as a big diplomatic success for Sudan.

Ambassador Irrwah said that the decision on approving Sudan as nominee for Africa at the Security Council was adopted at a meeting of the committee for African nominations Tuesday morning at the headquarters of the United Nations.

He indicated that the nomination committee selected Sudan from la list which also included Mauritius and Uganda.

Irrwah said that the coming meetings of the ministerial council and summit of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in Lome are expected to approve Sudan nomination for the membership of the Security Council.

It is to be recalled that the African seat at the Security Council will be vacant in early next year by expiry of Namibia's membership term.

The final elections will be held by the the United Nations General Assembly in November 2000.
