you're quite right - it may have started already. after all, there hasn't been an independent audit of the reserves for a very long time, so there's no way to ascertain the true state of affairs beyond the treasury's word.

even the conservative Economist has recently remarked that something fishy seems to be going on in the gold market, as the supply/demand stats would argue for rising prices, which stubbornly refuse to materialize. conclusion: there must be a big anonymous seller.
