There really is nothing to be done with my mother. She means well, and has different sensibilities. Last night she wanted us all to eat together because it was a holiday, and her frame of reference was holiday get-together, not casual cookout. She was running around trying to create the type of holiday formality we have at Christmas, New Year's and Easter, which was at cross-purposes. I did try to explain after I cooled down. She also feels uncomfortable when there is silence at meal times, and feels that she must say something, anything, to fill what she perceives as uncomfortable gaps. I try to explain to her that we just don't talk as much as she does, but there's no tactful way to say that.

Saw a deal on TV where two guys in a town near here have a sawmill set up on a flatbed. They will come to your house and mill a tree on the spot for a fee and any damages to their saw caused by metal objects.
