Now here is some very cool information. A local company that sells supplies and wood for woodworkers also has a shop you can use by paying by the hour or month, and they teach classes on woodworking. I know them because I took a basic introductory course a few years ago. I just called them up and asked about turning the tree into lumber, and the man who answered the phone gave me the name and number of a guy in the area with a portable sawmill, called a Wood-Mizer, and the guy will come out and give me a free estimate and maybe buy the wood to use or resell. The man told me that the wood was very desireable and I should be able to sell it. He also told me I should try to sell the root ball, as the wood is also desireable due to the figures in it.

He did say that it wouldn't be worthwhile to use it for flooring because of the time and labor involved to turn it into flooring, I'd be better off buying flooring.

What would be wrong with air-drying the lumber in my garage?

One of the things I regret when I sold my club was that I didn't cut the burl from an old sycamore that was about to go in the river. It was probably 2' across and stuck out a foot.

PBS carries The New Yankee Workshop. Norm Abrams takes wood from old houses and wherever he can find it, planes it to dimensions and builds furniture. Some of the wood he recycles is over 100 years old.
