Those are some fine questions and I look forward to the others. They should be very helpful but I agree with Mag on the pro lessons. Most 90 shooters are not fundamentally sound. Playing lessons are of great value but without a good fundamental base to start from you will be just applying bandaids...not fixing the root problem. It has been my experience that some pros teach systems and some stress fundamentals. As a whole, tour professionals are thinking nothing but target and visualizing the shot (course management)they want to hit once they are on the course. After a missed shot, you will see most pros checking a part of their swing to see if what they have been working on while practicing has changed. Next time you see Tiger after a bad shot notice that he is constantly checking his hand and arm position on the way back. This is what he has been working on recently.

What are your golf goals?

I think this is the key question here. If the players' goal is to shoot the best he can short-term...yes...playing tips and short game practice is the way to go. If the player wants to become a better golfer and is willing to invest some time and effort, see your local pro.

J.B.C.

I agree with your thoughts on what you can get from a given pro.

I was mad as hell at my pro last week. First time this ever has happened in our relationship. He knew I was mad too.

My last visit has made me rethink if I will see him again. The mechanics are pretty much there for me now, and they are not just "true form" but rather adapted to my body, strength, and skill. I am getting to the point where I don't need just anyone monkeying with them. When I am self-destructing the pro can be very valuable to getting me back on "my" path, but I have noticed diminishing returns when my ball striking is good.

Have a good one and hit em soon.

JBC...thanks for the assist on breaking that wall of steel that I seem to be hitting at 90...I REALLY think I'm at the cusp of making something happen and KNOW I hit the ball more solidly now than when I did just 1 or 2 years ago, but alas, my scores don't reflect that fact...I also agree with the view that mechanics without regard for the mental side of the game will all be for naught...in answer to your questions:

Let's do a little assessment here if you will (please be honest):

How old are you? 42
What is your general physical condition? Good to excellent, but a rather late start to the game (started age 37)
What are your Golf goals? Have fun, be competitive, break 80.

On the range:

My shots for my 7 thru wedges are generally repeatable for distance and direction. True or False. True most (60-70%) of the time.

My shots for for 3 thru 6 are generally repeatable for distance. True or False. A bit less percentage wise here,

I can generally "make" the shot I want on the driving range, but I can't carry it over to the course. True or False. Very True

I consider myself a great putter on the practice green. True or False. False

I can get up and down from inside 50 yards to just off the green about 40-50 % of the time.

I'll add one other: I choke whenever I'm in contention, whether it be a $5 nassau or a more serious club tournament. TRUE!!!
