I sniff.;^) Mr. Lacey, the man with the Wood-Mizer, just told me that the tree probably only has 300 bd. ft. in it, he said only a redwood has 1000 bd. ft. in it. He charges $35 setup fee, 35 cents per useable board foot to turn the tree into lumber, 45 cents for quarter-sawn, and $25 per blade if it gets broken. That's versus $4-$5 dollar retail for kiln-dried wood. He will come out and see if it can be done, but wants us to wait until September or later so he doesn't have to work in the heat. And Bernie, tree man number five, votes for black oak, and points out that there is a girdling root, which has caused the bottom of the tree to be narrowed, a vase-shape he calls it, which makes it unstable. He can take it down for about $700 and will have his insurance company send us a certificate of insurance. So that's the way it is.
