Qwest gets a lift from BofA

--2:57 pm - By Tomi Kilgore

In a midday research note, Analyst Andrew Hamerling at Banc of America raised his 12-month price target on Qwest Communications (Q: news, msgs) to $69 from $67 "to correspond with the synergies that we believe could be derived from the now combined Qwest/U.S. West (USW: news, msgs). Qwest's stock is up 2 3/16 to 53 15/16.

Predictions:

What I don't see being discussed on this board is that Q is a far more attractive buy than Sprint now especially since they have USW -- that gives then ownership on a lot of 'last mile'. If DT were interested in buying them for their LD business, I think anyone thinking that is rather naive. Anyone wanting to buy Sprint would do so for for the wireless business, not so much the LD business. So, here's what I think we might see:

1. DT gets interested in Qwest and BLS and buys them out on a joint deal
2. Sprint splits up its wireless and LD business - (they've done it int he past with their cellular business), sells the wireless business at a high price, and the LD business at some throw away price
3. DT also looks at the option of buying SBC (and I believe they have discussed a deal rather seriously in the recent past), but doesn't go with it - too many egos, too large a beast for DT to swallow.

Thoughts anyone?
