Hi, Bryan. I'm confused. Here's what you say:

Message #1474 from BryanB at Jul 5, 2000 5:47 PM
Bill,

For example, the problem with usernames being substituted for aliases could not possibly have happened on Thursday morning. Why? Because, as we stated in the PM, the problem was caused by our database rollover, which did not occur until Thursday evening.......
Thanks,

Bryan <i/>

And here's what John Busby says.....

Kid Rock,
Silicon Investor migrated from Microsoft to Oracle database. The database itself was not the cause of this weekend's problems.

John

So....is it or isn't it? A better way of asking might be, "do you have the faintest idea what is causing the problem or how to fix it???"

Bryan,

<< This "alias issue" was certainly the most serious, and therefore we wanted to communicate the specifics as soon as we had resolved the situation and the underlying cause >>

Thank you for resolving the "underlying cause". That is most important.

OK, Bryan, have it your way. BUT, I posted a message to YOU at 4:18 AM on Thursday morning wherein I described the problem that I was seeing at that time - "....Additionally, the message listings are displaying login ID's instead of aliases!"

Message 13965284

So.....that means that I was describing a problem that was about to happen that evening, right? I wasn't aware that I had this power to see the future. Maybe you could use me before your next "migration"...might save you a lot of headaches. Let me know if you care to hear my predictions for the future of SI.

Good luck

Bill

Bryan,

There is absolutely NO WAY you are going to skate your way out of this one.

The userID's sit was way before Thursday night and John Busby had already informed everyone that the change over had NOTHING to do with the problems.

Bryan I really don't know what PR school you attended or have adapted for your use BUT I can tell you that lying, especially now, is definitely NOT the way to go.

Skirting the truth is also NOT the solution.

Evading the truth is NOT the solution.

ANYTHING Short of the ABSOLUTE TRUTH will not hold water right now.

Better fess up Bryan. It's way too late for anything else.

Sincerely
JD

Bryan I was awake at the time (6/29/00 at 4:18 AM) and saw the message posted by wlcnyc and also saw the usernames being shown. Your post is the second time I have seen an upper management person deny the facts. Why are you doing this? You can only make things worse for SI.

Message 13965284

Also, why won't you answer the private message I sent you a couple of hours ago? I know you are online because you have posted since then.

Bryan,
Normally I wouldn't pile on, but this is one of the threads I have bookmarked which does not show up under the "Subjects with new messages" headings when new messages appear. This problem seems to be happening mostly on "Welcome to SI" threads. Posting a message to the thread appears to clear up the problem.

So, as long as I'm here...

The kindest interpretation I can put on your recent mass PM is that you are being misled and hoodwinked by your development staff. In any event, it is clear that more supervision is needed. A new position needs to be created. This person must be given the right of final signoff on all system changes. Whoever gets this position needs to be strong, not afraid of missed deadlines, well versed in proper systems design and implementation, and most importantly, outside the normal reporting chain so they can be counted on to remain independent, Your programming staff should NEVER AGAIN be allowed to implement system upgrades without a signoff from this person. I can think of an obvious candidate for this position, but as long as the above qualifications are met, the identity of this individual is not important. This organizational change needs to be put in place immediately.

I am also assuming that the timing of this debacle was driven by an internal requirement to get the upgrade done before the end of the second quarter. I think I can safely assure you that the user community did not share this need, and would in fact have much preferred you to wait until the weekend to get it done. It would have been even better had you waited until it was done right. In any event, even though John Busby says that "the upgrade was technically completed" before the 1st, I do not believe that any bonuses or other incentives which were based on getting this upgrade in before July 1 should be given. They were not earned.

Edit: The bookmark problem was indeed resolved by making this post, but we seem to be having the problem of having miscellaneous html "p"'s and "br"'s inserted after the edit preview. I've tried removing them in this edit.
