Mani, I read it the same way-- I saw "enhanced" and that was all it took...

Ah well, I've posted my retraction on Yahoo; too bad my initial post had a smug barb aimed at one of the most intolerable bashers on that thread. Doh.

Doug

okay, I'm ending this before it goes to far OT.

Mani...when chic and I were discussing starting this new thread, we both agreed that we didn't want to moderate. It doesn't surprise me that you volunteered for the job. The old thread was getting to be too much to handle, even though I was one to throw a lot of barbs. Thank you for starting the thread and thanks to chic for doing all the ground work to get it started.

An updated story from Marketwatch on the Gateway situation:

www2.marketwatch.com{E60CF5A0-8C17-47E9-93B9-A9CA164B3EC7}

This excerpt from that article should finally be getting out to the public soon:

Specific details about the problem are scarce, but Ritter says Gateway has verified that neither the Thunderbird processor, nor the AMD 750 chip set Gateway uses with the chip, are the cause of the problem.

Once again Thanks,
Ed P.

Mani, Re: Compaq T-Birds?

Saw this over on RB (Spinynorman, ragingbull.com

BIG NEWS! - Compaq T-Bird!!!

I just got off the phone with Compaq sales at 1.800.888.0220, saying I'd noticed that
their web site has changed the Presario 7000 model number to 7000Z, and wondering
if that was the T-Bird (it still shows Athlon/Enhanced 3DNow)... the sales guy said that
yes the 7000Z was the T-Bird, but that he wasn't sure if it was actually available yet..
and went off to check for me....

YES!!!!!

The Presario 7000Z is a T-Bird, and it is available!!!

It's a pretty slick looking machine too (kinda I-Mac'y).

Went to Compaq web-site and it still says "Performance Enhancing Cache." Maybe the web site updates are as slow as Compaq's inventory turns?

[EDIT: Oops. Still trying to catch up on RB and found this update (http://www.ragingbull.com/mboard/boards.cgi?board=AMD&read=23784)

Conflicting information!

I just spoke to someone else in Compaq sales, who told me that the 7000Z is still
Athlon, but that T-Bird is coming "later this month"... he said it would be the slot, which
would seem to imply that Compaq's socket-A mobo will be used for Duron (although
AMD used it in their benchmarks for T-Bird).

What's also interesting is that the salesguy volunteered without me asking that if I was
calling about the Gateway problem that it was a Gateway only problem, and would not
affect Compaqs T-Bird system. I guess that's good news at least (although expected),
but I was rather hoping to see a socket-A T-Bird!
