I had to look that one up on Intel's website myself:

Advanced Transfer Cache, scalable from 1MB to 2MB, with advanced system buffering

Boosts performance by placing full-speed level-two cache memory directly on the processor die and increasing the width of the data pathway to the processor


This technology seems to be a big barrier to anyone else getting into the database server chip business for a long time. I mean, does AMD, or anyone else have any plans for such massive on-die full speed cache? That's the type of chip IBM, HP, Dell and Compaq all use for the 4 ways and 8 ways. No 256KB L2s for those dudes. I think Intel first started building such chips for HP's PA-Risc line, didn't they, then swung the technology over to the Xeons?

Just a thought.
